Pet Smart vs Petco vs That Pet Place vs Pet Supplies Plus

As much as I'd like to individually compare items at each store, that is not what this post is about. I will be comparing the setup, product selection, and atmosphere's of each pet store. These are the four pet stores that are closest to me, but I will review any new stores that I visit outside of Lancaster, PA.

Pet Smart
I've been to a lot of Pet Smarts and I have always liked the atmosphere. I'm pretty sure that's why I always return! The employees at my local Pet Smart remember Waldo and I are always helpful. They have a large selection of everything I could possibly need. I've found dog aspirin to waterless shampoo! Their selection on most items is impressive and I love that they have a Martha Stewart line. I usually get Waldo's food at Pet Smart because of the location and how we are treated in the store. Every Pet Smart I have been to has been similar.

Petco
The atmosphere of Petco isn't as open and the layout isn't as easy to maneuver, but it isn't difficult. I've found a lot of unique products at Petco, especially toys. They have more pop culture-based toys and organic food than Pet Smart. Their pet accessory section is actually larger than Pet Smart at most stores and I've seen some cute and functional clothing or protective wear for animals. They also have a 5% back towards another purchase which would be great if the nearest store wasn't 20 minutes away. It might just be me, but I like straight aisles better than aisles around a hub. That's probably why I prefer Pet Smart over Pet Co.

That Pet Place
This place is massive. The aquarium that is attached (part of That Fish Place) is also a store. As for the fish part of the store, I wasn't very impressed. It seemed very dingy and bland. It didn't seem like the setup was purposeful and the aisles were messy. The pet store was better, but not as well organized as other pet stores. The toy selection was great, but it didn't seem much better than any other store that I've seen. There were a few unique products that I haven't seen and a large selection of dog food, but there the rest of the sections seemed bare. As for the other animals, the store had more than most. I saw more bird and fish supplies than any other store, but for dogs, there wasn't anything that special.

Pet Supplies Plus
I had never heard of this store even though it is a chain store. The store closest to me is quite small, but they have a large selection of food and toys. The only other section that seemed full was the health and bath section. There were very few choices in accessories, crates, bowls, travel, etc. Since Waldo travels with me almost everywhere, I usually stop in those sections so I was disappointed.

Out of these four stores, I have to stick with Pet Smart. The atmosphere and location are two major points that influenced my decision, but it also has larger sections than two of the other stores. There are some perks to the other stores, but unless my first choices fall through, I probably won't be making the trip out there.

Frozen Treats: Pupsicles!

Waldo loves ice so I've been trying to create recipes that are both frozen and healthy for Waldo. The ice is great for this sore gums. Poor puppy!

I've been searching the Internet for creative ideas when I came across this idea... Frozen Pupsicles! (http://wearwagrepeat.com/2013/08/diy-gourmet-pupsicles/)

I modified the idea slightly to include teething sticks and here are some photos!

Let's Talk About #2: Flush Puppies Review

One of the worst parts about owning a dog is picking up his #2s and, unfortunately, his #3s. (If you can't figure out what #3s are, then you don't want to know) For me, living in an apartment made it difficult for me to dispose of Waldo's waste. I didn't want it in my trash can and I didn't want to spend that much time at the dumpster. I realized his #2s would flush the same as human #2s and it would save me time, be more sanitary, and it would be better for the environment. That being said, I wasn't sure how to make this a reality. I didn't like having to dump each dog bag because that seemed wasteful. I was at a loss. Reusable seemed gross on the go, and with accidents, toilet paper is fine, but when we are outside or in public, bags are best. What will best fit our unique lifestyle? I had been researching my options when I saw Flush Puppies at my local Pet Smart. I loved the concept and I wish they were more popular! I try to only use them when I'm flushing, but they are very sturdy and can be thrown out without any concern. I have not had any sewer/toilet problems and I don't have to go very far to dispose of Waldo's waste in the winter. It's a win-win for me and the environment. I just wish they were cheaper, but honestly, they're worth every penny.

Peanut Butter Yogurt Frozen Dog Treats

Waldo has been chewing everything he can get his teeth around so I decided to make him some frozen treats to help his gums feel better. I used fat-free yogurt and peanut butter. I filled the bottom with peanut butter and then added the yogurt on top. He seems to really like them! I'm going to try using some fruit next time!

Sorry about the bad quality photos, I only had my phone with me!

This is the recipe that I based my creations on:

"How Are You Going to Be Able to Give Him Up?" and Other Questions About Raising A Service Dog

From the moment I started telling people that I would be raising a service dog, they immediately asking me questions about the process and how I would be able to part with the dog. I was confused at first by people's responses. I was beyond excited about the opportunity to help another person and every one I spoke to seemed to be focused on how upset I would be when having to give up a dog that was never mine in the first place. To me, my decision was focused on the end goal of helping someone and even though I always knew it would be difficult giving up a dog I had raised and spent so much time with, it was more important that the dog would be able to help someone else.

I was beyond excited to be able to volunteer with Susquehanna Service Dogs and I love to be able to see what these dogs are able to learn and achieve. Every day, I am amazed to see what Waldo is able to do or get into around my apartment. He has grown so tall and has his own distinct personality. I love how he is quickly learning and so eagar to try new food and tricks. If only he could get some of that energy out quicker! I'll keep you updated on his life.

FAQ
How are you going to be able to give him up?
Legally, I signed a paper saying that he is not my dog and that I would return him to the program, but in all honestly, it is going to be difficult. I am not focusing on that part of the process. It is not important. I choose to focus on the importance of his life rather than losing him.

Is it difficult to train him?
It is more frustrating than difficult to train him. He loves training most of the time and he seems to pick up everything rather quickly, but he does get distracted quite easily and that can be quite annoying.

Do you get paid to do this?
No, this is not a paid position, but it is tax deductable.
